Students enrolled in Edge Tech’s Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Basic Refrigeration can expect to train with instructors that have industry knowledge and experience in the heating and cooling fields. This program is designed so that students can gain the knowledge and HVAC skills that employers desire. 

Should I Become An HVAC Technician?

As an HVAC technician, your responsibilities can include repairs, maintenance, and installation of heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems in commercial and residential properties. You will get to work with your hands, you will be able to work on multiple different projects, and you will have the freedom and flexibility to work as you want. Depending on your employer, you can also expect to:

  • Read blueprints and other specifications
  • Improve HVAC system performance through troubleshooting
  • Clean and replace ducts
  • Layout, design, and install low voltage electrical wiring

If you are looking for a growing career field, HVAC/BR is a great choice.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics careers for HVAC/BR technicians in both residential and commercial fields are projected to grow 13 percent from 2018 to 2028.

Training To Become an HVAC Technician

The HVAC technician training at Edge Tech is a combination of classroom and on-the-job-style training. Students will get hands-on learning experience from industry professionals working with air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration. Our small class sizes help each student receive the support to succeed in the program.

Edge Tech’s HVAC/BR program teaches not only HVAC/BR systems, but also offers students training and education for multiple facets within the industry. Some of the topics include:

  • Air Conditioning
  • Heating
  • Furnace Repair 
  • Technical Customer Service
  • Interpretation Skills 

By the end of the program, our students should be prepared to sit for the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society (RSES) technician certification exams*.

What Does an HVAC Technician Do?

 HVAC/BR technicians perform a variety of important roles while maintaining and troubleshooting residential and commercial systems. Graduates of our HVAC program in Texas typically encounter some of the following tasks:

  • Connecting and changing electrical wiring
  • Performing tests and analyzing results
  • Performing actual repair work while ensuring complete job site safety

HVAC technicians may need to be prepared to install and prep HVAC systems of all kinds. Processes and job responsibilities can differ at every site, so it’s important to remain prepared. 

HVAC Technician Professional Requirements

Graduates seeking to become a registered technician in the state of Texas must:

  • Be at least 18 years or older 
  • Complete a TDLR Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician application
  • Pay a non-refundable application fee of $20.00
  • Complete a Background Check (A person who might have something on their background check will have to work with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation to determine if this hinders them from being registered.)

Please note that the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Basic Refrigeration at Edge Tech Academy is not approved by TDLR in Texas. Graduates can apply to become a registered technician with TDLR but graduating from the program does not meet TDLR requirements to obtain a technician certification. Any person who assists a licensed air conditioning and refrigeration contractor in performing air conditioning and refrigeration maintenance or repair work must register as a technician.

How Much Money Do HVAC Technicians Make?

The median annual wage for heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers was $47,610 in May 2018. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $29,460, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $76,230.*
